Every day parents face the challenge of too much to do in too little time. Juggling both family and work responsibilities is a challenge facing every parent. Moms and dads often feel as if they are not spending enough quality time with their children. As a parent, it may seem like you are spending so much time providing for your family that you do not have enough time simply to enjoy your children. You might feel as if you have to plan a huge family outing in order to really be giving your children your undivided attention.
You might think that it will be easier to offer your children quality time if you plan a family vacation. You may think that you are better able to shut out work and other responsibilities for a few days if you go on a vacation. It is true that vacationing is a great way to spend quality time with your entire family. Vacations provide an opportunity to focus on family and fun while allowing you to leave other worries behind. You may take your children on a dream vacation that you were unable to take as a child. Or, you may continue vacation traditions from your own childhood. However, it is not necessary to travel miles away from home in order to spend quality time with your kids.
Quality time and fun activities need not involve going away from home for days or spending exuberant amounts of money. You can just as easily spend meaningful and fulfilling quality time with your children by planning a special weekend, a special day or even a fun-filled afternoon. Children care most about being with their parents. It doesn’t matter to them all that much what you do or how much money you spend, as long as your kids have your undivided attention for a while.
The following are some ideas of how to plan some quality time with your kids that will be rewarding for your children as well as for you!
A Weekend of Fun
You need not spend thousands of dollars planning an extended family vacation in order to enjoy your family. It is just as easy to clear your schedule for a weekend and plan a short trip. You can go camping for a night or two. Sit by the campfire singing and telling stories with your children. Another popular weekend attraction is to visit a theme park in your area. Your weekend plans also could involve staying home. Tell your children that this is a weekend when you are going to let your chores go so that you can simply hang out together for the entire weekend. Spend a day or two eating pizza, watching movies, and just enjoying each other’s company without other distractions.
Spend the Day Together
Another way to spend quality time with your children is to plan a day trip. Almost anywhere you live is within driving distance to some fun attraction. Plan a trip to a local museum, an area park, or another fun place. If your children are older, you might spend the day shopping and then grabbing a nice lunch or dinner. And of course, even with your older children you can spend the day at a local park playing sports and eating a picnic.
An afternoon or an evening
Sometimes you really can’t spend an entire weekend or even a whole day away from work or other projects. This does not mean that you still can’t spend quality time with your children. Kids always come first but in today’s busy world it can be hard to have some down time. Your kids will love spending time with you even when it is just a special afternoon or evening. One day after work, you can take your kids out for dinner or plan a special dinner that everyone can prepare together at home. Pick up a few movies that your kids will enjoy and hang out for an evening, snacking and watching flicks. Another great way to spend quality time with your children is to spend an evening playing board games or card games together as a family. If it is a nice day, you can go out and play catch or other outdoor activities. It is not difficult to find ways to spend time with your kids.
Remember it is not how much money you spend or what you do that counts. The trick is to plan quality time with your children that everyone will enjoy. No matter how busy you are, there is always an opportunity to spend time with your kids that will be relaxing and rewarding for all.
